Tom Watson

OK. This is not a Rotary story. Yesterday was my 65th birthday. Last month, before the RI International Convention in Birmingham, we visited Scotland. St. Andrews is the home of golf and is closed on Sundays, but you can walk the course. On Sunday, June 14th, I walked all 22 holes. Golfers have been playing St. Andrews since 1595 and I could hear the ghosts.

On my 65th birthday, I was glued to the TV watching the British Open at Turnberry, Scotland. A 59 year old Tom Watson from my home town of Kansas City was fighting wind and age and the yips to arrive on the 18th green of Turnberry. He had an 8 foot putt to win one for the aged. If he made it, he would have been 13 years older than any other golfer to ever win a major tournament. I can't ever remember more wanting someone to make a putt.

He missed it. Now I have missed three foot putts on a $2 Nassau. My life is a constant failure putting. But thank you, Tom Watson, for at least showing the world that old farts can compete.
