Alvin Jones

Most clubs have people that do one thing better than anyone else. Sometimes they get so good at it that no one else even thinks about doing it. Alvin Jones of the Rotary Club of Westminster is one of those specialists. It is certainly not the only thing he does. He gave the invocation during my official visit, including an appeal for Divine Guidance for the District Governor. He helps prepare the Christmas Care Baskets for the elderly, and then delivers a substantial number himself. He coordinates elderly visits for his church congregation.

Alvin Jones was by profession a salesman and business leader. He spent a 45 year career rising to top management at Life of Georgia. He retired in 1979 and eventually joined Rotary in 1988. Still using his sales skills today, his specialty is to collect auction items, rafflle gifts and door prizes from local businesses for the club's various fund raising events. He says that he always manages to get more prizes than are needed. Why? He says that the people that he calls on just want to get rid of him. His club says "who can say no to a 92 year old man that drives to your business to solicit and pick up the prizes?"

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
