Greater Anderson, July 9
I visited Greater Anderson today. Last year, the Club raised over $37,000 and spent over 400 manhours on service projects. We are in the process of compiling lists of projects for all clubs.
One of the most impressive greater Anderson projects was adopting a class at Nevitt Forest Elementary, a Title I School. Rotarian Carla Heritage's daughter Ashley Anderson is the teacher for a kindergarten class. Members of the club adopted the class, providing supplies, mentors special needs, etc. The club had a Christmas party for them. Ovid Culler took his adoptee to the Georgia Aquarium.
The member tries to visit his or her adopted child once per week. The class is African American, and when Barack O'Bama was elected President, a club member took newspapers to the class and explained the signficance. The Rotarians have become a significant part of these children's lives. Positive impact: test scores for the kindergartners improved 10% since Rotary got involved. Positive impact: "We get so much out of it" said Cathy Golson.
